What does Open Source mean to OpenClovis customers?
Many prospective customers are interested in getting started with OpenClovis product as soon as possible. To help make this a reality and speed customers on their way to development OpenClovis has released to the open source community version 2.2 of OpenClovis. Some of the many benefits users will recognize are:

  • Immediate access to OpenClovis' version 2.2 product & it's source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (For additional information on the GPL, please see www.fsf.org)
  • This provides an opportunity to try before you "buy"
  • Ability to test, modify, extend and adapt OpenClovis Product

What license options are available to OpenClovis customers and partners?
OpenClovis is adopting a dual licensing model that will enable users to decide on which type of license best fits their needs. It is important to decide at the outset of your development which licensing model best fits with your distribution plans.

What does dual licensing mean?
A dual licensing business model means users may choose to use OpenClovis version 2.2 under the free software/open source GNU General Public License (GPL) or under a commercial license

GPL License
With the GPL license, OpenClovis version 2.2 is available free of charge to users whose only desire is to evaluate, test, modify, extend, etc. i.e., they do not intend to resell or implement the software on either hardware platforms or as part of 3rd party commercially distributed software product. They are simply interested in learning about the technology or being a developer/contributor.

GPL users must abide by the rules of the GPL, which stipulate that if an OpenClovis based derivative application is developed with the intent to redistribute, then the complete source code for this application must also be open and returned to the developer community.

For OEMs, ISVs, and VARs who want to distribute OpenClovis with their products OpenClovis will provide an OEM Commercial License and optional support level packages.

Commercial License Model
OpenClovis offers a commercial license for OEMs, ISVs and VARs, who do not want to release their source code for their application. Commercial license customers get a commercially supported product with various levels of support without the requirement that their modifications be open sourced or presented back into the developer community. OpenClovis will provide indemnification to users under commercial license terms.

Why Should I pay for support ?
OpenClovis support is available from both the User community and from the expert engineering teams at OpenClovis. Support from the user community typically consists of other user experiences and adaptations that are created in a developmental environment.

Paying for support from OpenClovis under commercial terms assures developers that they are getting trusted support from OpenClovis engineers who create the OpenClovis software product. This ensures that your implementation of OpenClovis will be of the highest quality

Are other companies using the dual licensing business model?
Yes, the dual licensing business model is becoming increasingly popular among open source companies. Other companies that offer dual licensing include Digium, OSAF, Mandriva, Funambol, Sleepycat Software,Trolltech, MySQL and others.
